If you’re like many people, you have questions about toothaches. Maybe you’re curious about the causes of a toothache, ways to relieve a toothache, or even how to prevent toothaches down the road. Well, you have come to the right blog if this is the case for you. Our dentist, Dr. Evan Wheeler, would be happy to answer your questions and teach you more about toothaches by answering commonly asked questions.
What causes a toothache?
Unfortunately, there are many things that can cause a toothache, and it’s best to determine it so you or your dentist can properly treat it. The toothache culprits generally include something stuck between your teeth, a decayed tooth, an infected mouth, an abscessed tooth, a cracked tooth, trauma to the tooth, or a sinus infection.
How can I relieve a toothache?
First, try to deeply clean around the tooth by brushing and flossing. This should help relieve the ache if an object is stuck between the teeth or in the gums. Then, rinse your mouth with saltwater. This can help reduce swelling and kill bacteria. If these things don’t help you, it’s important to schedule an appointment with your dentist, especially if the toothache lasts more than two days. If a sinus infection is causing your toothache, please call your physician.
How can I prevent toothaches in the future?
The best way to prevent toothaches in the future is to have a diligent oral hygiene routine. This means you should brush every morning and night, floss and rinse daily, and visit your dentist every six months. You can also prevent oral trauma by wearing a mouthguard while you are actively participating in high-contact sports and activities.
